Charles England Elementary School's Odyssey of the Mind Team competed and placed 2nd at the Northern Regional Tournament

Charles England Elementary School's Odyssey of the Mind Team competed and placed 2nd at the Northern Regional Tournament on March 9, 2019 and will advance to the state level tournament.  Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition that focuses on creativity and team work.  There are five different problems to choose from, and Charles England competed in the elementary division Problem 4 Structure Toss.  Students were challenged to create a balsa wood structure that had to be thrown and then hold as much weight as possible.  Students had to present their structure in a creative performance with a carnival theme.  All aspects of the performance, from the backdrops to the skit, were 100% student created.  The second part of the competition, known as spontaneous, tests the team on their ability to work together and think creatively on the spot.  Students are tasked with either a verbal, hands-on, or combination activity and try to score the maximum points.  Scores are combined and a winner is announced.  The top two teams for each division and problem head to the State competition at East Carolina University.
The state competition will be held April 6, 2019.  The team is lead by coaches Kaaren Haworth and Jessalyn Spell.  Student members are three year participants Katie Leahy, Kelsey Williams, and Soriya Long, two year participant Tori Varner, and first year participants Ella Howell, Cameron Maddox, and Parker Horton.  Students will present the same solution they did at regionals with improvements based on judging feedback.  The top two in the elementary division for each problem will advance to the world competition is held at Michigan State University May 22-25, 2019.  Let's go Jackets!
